Broad Ripple Fire Station

Sketched with the Urban Sketcher class in Broad Ripple at a spot, under the canopy of the Corner Wine Bar. So, we kept somewhat cool, talked art and drew the sites around us. The fire station was directly accross from us, so that was my choice. 5th week and the students are showing great improvement.

This is a part of the extended beach area at the Hotel at Mauna Kea. I was there in early February to paint a commission for one of the Mauna Kea Villas. Every day was between 85 and 90 degrees. I know...nice gig. It sure beat shoveling snow back in Indaian.

This was one of the famous golf holes on the course at Mauna Kea. Walking down to the beach where I did the 4'x8' commission painting, I pass this beautiful hole. Even from the women's tee, it is quite a smack to reach the other end.

It's been a long winter, and it's not over, so here are a couple of my sketches done from indoors at home. These are views from my front room looking at my street. You can get cabin fever just from looking at the sketches! Some of the snow has melted since these were done, but it's still pretty dismal out there. USS Indianapolis Memorial

"At 12:14 a.m. on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea and sank in 12 minutes. Of 1,196 men on board, approximately 300 went down with the ship. The remainder, about 900 men, were left floating in shark-infested waters with no lifeboats and most with no food or water. The ship was never missed, and by the time the survivors were spotted by accident four days later only 316 men were still alive." from www.ussindianapolis.org

This is our Memorial to the USS Indianapolis, built on the downtown Canal Walk. I sketched it on Veterans' Day.

Spent a wonderful Saturday morning with Karen at the new Ornithology Center at Eagle Creek Park. A true sport would have sketched the live birds over the reservoir, viewed from the comfy, heated outlook. The more practical would opt for sketching a stuffed bird on display, one that was sure not to move. Call us practical, but it worked. The Ornithology Center is a wonderful resource and there is no charge for visiting. Please support Eagle Creek Park and their conservation efforts by visiting the educational resources, including the new Ornithology Center.

This sketch may not look urban, but was done at a city park, Eagle Creek. Mindi and I met there to see the new ornithology center. It's awesome, worth another trip. We stayed indoors and sketched from the panorama they had set up. Thanks to taxidermy, these ducks didn't move, so it was much simpler to draw! I'm embarrassed to say that despite the informative staff of the center, I still don't know what kind of ducks these are.

Finding carved faces in Indianapolis's architecture is like discovering a little piece of gold among all the rocks. The Blacherne building's facade with it's carved faces had caught my eye as I waited at the stoplight a while back and they had been calling to me since then. I asked Karen and friend Debbie, to join me Tuesday morning to sketch them. This lady is under a set of windows on the northeast side of the building.

Had an opportunity to see the King Tut Exhibit at the Indianapolis Childrens Museum, so took my small sketchbook along. I discovered it is very difficult to stand and draw in the dark, but managed to get a little light to make this sketch. Exhibition was fantastic. Nice feeling to be around art that was made 1000s of years ago.

I ate these Oreo cookies one evening after we sketched at the White River State Park. I hated my canal sketch, so I tore it up and resolved to do something to overcome my frustration. First I ate some cookies, and then I sat down to sketch the shiny wrapper.
I definitely had trouble representing the various layers of the wrapper, and I don’t think I succeeded in adding dimensions to the sketch. But I was satisfied that I didn’t accept total defeat from the prior morning’s efforts.

Walked downtown this morning to sketch. I did the Central Library from some shade across the street. The library was remodeled in recent years. The newer, dark, windowed building is seen over the top of the old limestone building, which was preserved as the entrance to the new library. As the morning wore on and became much warmer, I walked to the Starbucks on Mass. Ave. and sketched from inside the cafe.

Combining a power walk with sketching, I arrived at the Starbucks before the heat set in. This is the view from the sidewalk cafe looking across Mass Ave. to the Toy Store. Lesson Learned

I drove down to Nashville to view the Heritage Exhibition and pick up my rejects. Wanted to see the show and try to figure out why one of my drawing was rejected. Over 100 paintings of oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel....and one small token ink drawing. So sketchers, once again, we realize that we are at the bottom of the totem pole and some exhibits and jurors see drawing as a study or whatever, but not in the class of "paintings." The one thing that I realized after seeing the works is that many artists need to spend more time drawing and looking before putting brush to surface. The best color and brush work do not make up for bad drawing in their subject matter.

On the Circle

Posting this sketch because of the lesson learned. This sketch was originally to have been several storefronts at the corner of South Meridian St. and the downtown Circle. I had begun to block in the composition when a large semi parked directly in front of the storefronts, the subject of my sketch. It appeared to be there for a delivery. I thought it would drive off in a few minutes, so didn't change my plan, but concentrated on the small unobstructed area on the left. The truck was there for over an hour, by the time it left, I needed to head home, so was left with this very unfinished, unbalanced sketch. I hoped to finish it later, but I never do that sort of thing. Lesson learned: Sketch what I see, not what I hope to see, and be ready to change direction when the original plan no longer works!

This is the view looking south. There were lots of people, but I chose not to include them in the sketch, as it was busy enough!

Met up with Karen M. and sketched for about an hour. I focused on finding some structure or pattern amid the confusion of the plants in the lily borders. Lots of lines of the leaves and stems, plus shadows that came and went as the sun disappeared behind clouds. In the end, I felt that I was looking at a small Calder-like sculpture, with the graceful arches rising and falling back to the earth again. When the rain started up, we dashed off to lunch!

I wanted to experiment with perspective with this drawing. Added the grey in Photoshop.

Side note: While working on the sketch a couple walked to the front of the sculpture and the young man dropped to his knee and proposed to his girlfriend. She was totally in shock. Sweet moment. This is the 2nd time this has happened. The 1st time was in Carol's garden, New Harmony, 2 years ago. Several painters were painting the fountain in the middle of the garden and a couple walked in and bingo, he proposed.

Because the Indianapolis Art Center is surrounded by beautiful grounds, trying to deceide what to draw can be daunting. But the Library wing with its bullseye window caught my attention and I was off. When I look at this drawing, I hear the buzzing of the bumble bees that were working in the blooms of the nearby flower beds.

Here’s my first sketch in 20+ years! Overall impressions from yesterday: I felt less tentative by the end of the hour or so of sketching than I did when I started. The time was well spent learning to “feel” the pencils again.
